1. Tips for MTS Operations

1. Tips for MTS Operations
John Palmer 09:14 Mon Nov 21/22 2 lines

This item will be to discuss MTS operations and notes about what to do
what to do and not to do.

1/1. John Palmer 09:17 Mon Nov 21/22 3 lines

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, type HELP Anywhere - there is no way
to get out of the help system other than stopping the task
from the operator's console

1/2. John Palmer 09:18 Mon Nov 21/22 5 lines

I know why Planet Claire was always walking around in
a daze like she just pulled her finger out of a light
socket.
What an unmitigated disaster ACC:ACCMAINT is. I have more
sympathy for her, for sure

1/3. John ZNBR ZBBB 09:24 Mon Nov 21/22 3 lines

Yup. I think we just need to bone up on our
editor commands again to get the ZBBB ids cer
created.

1/4. Tom Stevenson 13:22 Sat Nov 26/22 2 lines

They shouldn't be using those tubes at the SCB. They
could crash at any minute now.

1/5. John Palmer 13:25 Sat Nov 26/22 2 lines

Tom, Tom - always being pessimistic. Why was the controller
broken - bad telco link?

1/6. Taka Khumbartha 16:05 Tue Nov 29/22 2 lines

Tom, you're just upset that on this system, you are
a mere MRTL :->

1/7. Louis Sequin 18:42 Thu Dec 8/22 1 line

Tom, have a Chadder Milt - make you feel better....

1/8. John ZNBR ZBBB 15:52 Mon Dec 19/22 2 lines

Thought Tom has moved on to Linux. Maybe he has a hercie-mts
system running...

1/9. Tom Stevenson 13:07 Sat Jan 7/23 2 lines

I'm guessing my real-life doppleganger does, but not sure
I know he is on Facebook....

1/10. Joanne Stenquist 22:41 Sun Jan 22/23 2 lines

I ... maybe --- staring off into space like I did
in the past - I have no id(ea)....

1/11. John Palmer 15:24 Mon Jan 23/23 2 lines

Good old Joanne - just like when you were pres of the
ACM.

1/12. Tom Stevenson 18:02 Sat Jan 28/23 2 lines

those tubes - I ... don't think (hmmm) they should
be using .... those....

1/13. John Palmer 10:30 Mon Jan 30/23 3 lines

Oh Tom, just calm down. Why didn't someone tell the SCB
folks not to turn them on, or to put up signs saying
"These are not really reliable yet..."

1/14. Tom Stevenson 23:32 Mon Feb 6/23 4 lines

I'm just not going to accept responsibility if they
crash. Wait, that was in 1984 - Its 2023 now - do
you think that they are still up there? (The 3178's
I mean).

1/15. John Palmer 01:41 Tue Feb 7/23 3 lines

You know what Tom, I have a feeling that they
just might not still be at SCBS anymore. Just
sayin....

1/16. Sharan Kalwani 14:19 Wed Feb 8/23 3 lines

Doesn't look like there is any Pascal or FTN77 on this
system. I heard that PascalJB is available. Can we get
that perhaps? I'm starting to learn PLUS.

1/17. John Palmer 14:26 Wed Feb 8/23 4 lines

I heard that PascalJB has been approved. Not sure
about FTN77. I assume that's still an IBM thing.
Probably should forget about IBM releasing anything
to the public domain.

1/18. Rick Hill 16:12 Thu Feb 9/23 4 lines

We need *ASMH badly. I hAtE *ASMG and *ASMT. Probably
a pipe dream though, knowing IBM's track record. Its
not like they can make a buck on it. They won't even
sell you a license for it anymore.

1/19. Jim Sharpe 09:20 Thu Feb 16/23 2 lines

We need a version of Pascal. I can't do anything
with *FTN or *PLUS.

1/20. Paul O'Leary 06:45 Wed Feb 22/23 3 lines

PLUS isn't so bad - I would prefer Pascal. Didn't
I read that PascalJB's author released it to the
public? Wonder if UM will release it.

1/21. John Palmer 07:14 Wed Feb 22/23 26 lines

I saw both an e-mail from Parnes and from the
PascalJB author allowing the code to be released
to the MTS community, but I don't think anyone is
really working on MTS stuff at UofM now. I gotta
beleive that NAME OF TOP SECRET SOURCE REDACTED is either retired or
getting close to retirement, and there isn't any
formal, funded MTS efforts anymore. I know that
UM CSC has a course in "Software Archeology" and
that they peruse MTS code and have it running on
a department server under Linux/Hyperion, but thats
only for them. Also, I think they may also have
full use of *ASMH since UM has a site license that
goes way back.

I hate to pepper the MTS-390 email list with questions
because it sounds pushy. Someone else can do so
if they want, and I may slowly ask the questions
later on.

For instance, I know that "someone" (they) were
"working on" getting D7.0 running under Hyperion
but those messages on the list were from 2012 and
then mostly silence, which is not good. Again, remember
that this is a volunteer effort by those who are
retired or close to it, so be patient and also
be ready to expect that it may never happen.

1/22. Jim Sharpe 11:37 Wed Feb 22/23 3 lines

Day jobs and retirement pursuits trump digging
in the attic and playing with old artifacts.
Sometimes fun, but some things are more fun.

1/23. Louis Sequin 22:44 Wed Mar 1/23 2 lines

UNSP:PAS.BC works fine. Just tried it. Need
to know how to call system subs from it.

1/24. John Palmer 22:51 Wed Mar 1/23 2 lines

Yes - just made a helper program to frontend
Voldaccmaint

1/25. Joanne Stenquist 12:41 Thu Mar 2/23 4 lines

I think I used to code in Pascal. I tried
to read JPs RJE log saver but I couldn't
figure it out so i threw it away. I don't
know much of anything....

1/26. John Palmer 13:39 Thu Mar 2/23 5 lines

I thought so. How embarrasing - no one in
the ACM could figure out my code. It wasn't
that complicated. Also, I'm sure the Center
was lobbying you to do what you did, just
saying.

1/27. Trevor and Sinclair 07:46 Wed Mar 15/23 1 line

Joanne got BUUUUUSTEEED !!!

1/28. John Palmer 15:02 Sun Mar 26/23 13 lines

Looks like the ACM is still not a valid org at WSU.

I know that after Joanne and crew abandoned it after
chasing away all of the people who sacrificed (and
were willing to continue to contribute).

They briefly revived under Walter Van Buren, but
still never inspired others to join.

Sad. The heyday was right before I came in and while
I was there. Crutcher / Stenquist and miscreants like
Ray Peck(er) trashed it. It was the 1980's version of
TDS.

1/29. Paul O'Leary 15:34 Sun Mar 26/23 5 lines

I don't have any contact with any of the folks
in the CSD anymore, really. I think Bob Reynolds
is still there, but its mainly new folks. They
are part of Engg now - what a shake-up in only
10 years - Lib. Arts -> Science -> Engg.

1/30. John ZNBR ZBBB 20:16 Thu Mar 30/23 3 lines

I think The Brinx (Dr. Briggs) has probably
left the physical plane. He would be what, over
100 if he were still alive?

1/31. Gandalf Master 20:27 Thu Mar 30/23 2 lines

Just testing new name - had to set it to something
more readable.

1/32. Louis Sequin 22:23 Thu Mar 30/23 2 lines

I'm diggin the new name, now if only Confer
were available.
